In recent years, passive automotive safety has been continuously improved. The injury risk during frontal collisions especially could be considerably reduced thanks to structural modifications to the vehicle front, the use of seatbelts, seats with head rests and the installation of driver and passenger airbags. Frontal collisions account for 50 % of the overall accident rate while side impacts reach about 20 % to 35 %. As accident analyses of characteristic side collision variables such as position of the point of impact, impact angle and vehicle deformation show, this type of collision involves a clear injury risk. Based on these findings, intensive efforts are currently being made today to improve passenger protection during side impacts as well. In the early seventies, vehicles destined for the US market were already being fitted with reinforced doors to comply with the legal standards of that time. Ever since, these reinforcements have been constantly improved an optimized. In 1978, the European automotive manufacturers started to develop suitable side crash test procedures, including a movable, deformable side crash barrier. The dynamic side crash procedures used in the USA and Europe are explained and corresponding results are presented. This paper gives an idea of the side protection systems developed by PORSCHE since 1972 with the aim of meeting the US requirements on static tests. It gives an outlook on future side impact protection systems such as the side airbag and its components.
