The design of a prototype CNC machine for full-mold (lost-form) casting models is presented. The full-mold model is an essential intermediate process for making automobile press dies. To date, its production still relies heavily on manual operation which results in low efficiency and poor accuracy. Therefore, a CNC type full-mold model making machine with multiple functions such as scanning and machining is of great demand to the automobile die industry. In this paper, the overall system design and functional requirements of this machine are first to scan the master model or plaster mold to create a digitized version of the design. Next the digitized data will be processed by CAM software to generate NC files. Given an NC file, it will perform CNC machining. Therefore, system design of the machine consists of four major subsystems. They are: mechanical and mechanism design/system, PC-based CNC controller, non-contact laser scanning system, and reverse-type CAM system.
