Hydrodynamic performances of a naval surface ship rudder were experimentally investigated in the Large Cavitation Channel (LCC). This ship has twin rudders and twin propellers with outboard turns. Cavitation inception, cavitation patterns, rudder lift, rudder drag, and pressure distributions on the rudder surface at three rudder span locations were measured. Due to the propeller/rudder interaction, forces and pressure measurements and cavitation observations all showed a large onset flow angle at the rudder plane. Surface cavitation was observed at the outboard surface. No rudder surface cavitation was observed at the inboard surface even with a very large rudder deflection. Vortices shed from the propeller induced velocities at the rudder plane were computed from a potential flow code. The pressure distributions and rudder forces were computed by a three dimensional panel code which included the effect of ship wake and propeller slipstream. The calculated results were compared with experimental data. A viewing trial on rudder cavitation was conducted at a full scale naval surface ship. Severe cavitation was observed on the outboard surface. Inception of rudder surface cavitation on these rudders was compared with model measurements at LCC with favorable results.
