Material selection plays an important role in the design of parts made of fiber reinforced plastic (FRP). Despite the great advantages FRP parts offer over their metal counterparts in terms of physical properties, corrosion resistance, and weight reduction, composite materials have advanced slowly in certain markets such as under-the-hood automotive applications. The elevated temperatures and corrosive environment under the automobile hood impose special performance requirements on material design and selection. In addition to having good corrosion and thermal properties for use in under-the-hood molded components, SMC/BMC compounds must be designed to provide fire retardancy through the use of certain fillers and additives. Described in this paper is a new material which has been developed for use in molded parts requiring heat and corrosion resistance. Such parts include engine valve covers, oil pans, and battery trays. This new material has passed all requirements of corrosion, heat, and flame resistance according to ASTM and UL standards. Molded plaques were immersed in used motor oil at 160 deg C for 30 days to simulate an engine environment, then evaluated for appearance and retention of physical properties.
