Textiles may be considered as composite materials and are increasing in their applications in many industrial areas. The availability of high performance fibers based on minerals, ceramics and polymers, the advances of computerised knitting, weaving and braiding technologies in combination with improved coating technologies for fibers and fabrics enable a tailored design and production of textile materials. An overview will be presented regarding the application of technical textiles and their advantages and disadvantages with respect to structural and protection applications in the space industry.
