The effects of possible contaminants (typical materials found in composite repair environments within the aircraft industry) on the cure of epoxy resins were investigated using both calorimetric and rheological techniques. The chemical system studied was I.C.I's Fiberite 934 epoxy resin. The contaminants examined were Skydrol - a hydraulic fluid, Ardrox - a degreasing agent, and Cured Grit at various percentages by weight of the formulation. The kinetics of cure were determined using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results indicated that the contaminants do not alter the kinetic parameters of the crosslinking reaction. Thermal transitions were correlated with composition using dynamic thermal mechanical analysis (DMTA), and dielectric thermal analysis (DETA). The results showed that Skydrol had a marked effect on the final network structure.
