Ni-Zn batteries are strong candidates for electric vehicle (EV) application due to their high specific energy and specific power. The critical problem to be solved for the batteries is how to overcome dendrite shorts. In order to quantitatively evaluate short restraining performance of separators, additives, electrolytes and other elements, a short model cell (SMC) method has been developed. The authors succeeded in evaluating the short restraining performance of these elements using the SMC method and selected some good ones to form optimized batteries. These were then mounted on an electric scooter whereupon they evaluated the batteries and also determined the relationship that exists between the SMC evaluation and the scooter mounted battery evaluation.
