This paper describes the Electric Vehicle Impact Assessment Methodology (EVIAM) for assessing the impact of electric vehicles on an electric utility's secondary distribution system. Developed to evaluate EV impacts within Consolidated Edision's service area in New York City, the methodology integrates demographic, travel, utility, and EV technology information using state-of-the-art Geographical Information System (GIS) software. EVIAM capabilities include forecasts of EV impacts on specific utility substations and identification of strategic locations for fast-charging stations. The method can be adapted to meet diverse utility analytical requirements and can accomodate alternative assumptions regarding the timing and status of EV technology and vehicle commercialization. The paper reviews key assumptions adopted for the Consolidated Edison study as well as the results achieved.
