This paper describes the evolution and development of Ford Company's next generation front wheel drive electric powertrain for Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVS) which has undergone three design upgrades since its inception in 1990. This evolution was driven by Ford's commitment to a cost effective, highly efficient EV powertrain design with proven durability and manufacturability for both low and high volume processes. By-products of the development program have produced additional experience in corrosion protection, power electronic component design, synthetic lubricants, and EV duty cycle development. Future EV powertrain programs will concentrate on developing a range of configurations to accommodate a variety of vehicle packages for EV niche markets. Power electronics are discussed in a separate paper.
