The sodium sulfur battery has always been recognized for its excellent energy capability while providing adequate power. The battery developed in the mid-1980's by Silent Power was designed for delivery van applications requiring a moderate power-to-energy ratio (P/E). However, today's vehicle manufacturers are demanding higher power levels which the 1980 product cannot satisfy. Silent Power has therefore undertaken the development of a battery that will satisfy these higher P/E requirements. The first prototype battery employing this high power technology has now been built and has met all of its performance targets, exceeding the USABC mid-term goals. This paper presents this 'high power' (Mk6) battery design and discusses the results of the performance testing of the prototype battery.
