Ballard Power Systems Inc. has built the world's first Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) powered by a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cell Engine. A 32-foot transit bus, incorporating a first generation proprietary PEM Fuel Cell Engine, was completed in 1993 and demonstrates that fuel cells can provide the same performance as a diesel engine without any harmful emissions. Ballard is now building a 275 HP (205 kW) Zero Emission Fuel Cell Engine that will be installed in the standard engine compartment of a 40-foot heavy-duty New Flyer D40LF Low Floor Transit Bus. Testing of this ZEV Transit Bus will begin in mid 1995. A general description, including the principles of operation and technical specifications of the Fuel Cell Engine will be provided. The overall plan to commercialize heavy-duty Fuel Cell Engines in urban transit buses by 1998 will be described.
