This project investigates the configuration-shape-size optimization (CSSO) of orbiting and planetary space structures. The CSSO problem has been solved by Kikuchi and Bendsoe using the microhole homogenization method. With the microhole approach optimal structures are 'carved out' of a design domain, initially filled with finite elements, by alloying perforations (microholes) to develop, grow, and merge. However, the microhole approach runs into difficulties for space structures, which are mostly truss-like. This project uses this concept with the homogenization method. Instead of microholes, bar elements are incorporated with quadrilaterials to 'weave out' optimal structures in a 'web' approach. With this approach bars are allowed to develop, grow, and merge. Thus, the CSSO problem for space structures may be solved using a web approach to homogenization. Two web elements are presented in this paper.
