Although Hydraulically Assisted Power Steering systems (HAPS) have been in use for many years, a detail analysis of such systems do not exist. The main objective of this research is to analytically model a rack and pinion power steering system using bond graphs. To apply this technique, the steering system was divided into several subsystems. By combining the bond graph models of all the subsystems, a complete model was obtained. This model includes the steering wheel, steering column, universal joints, directional control valve, piston, rack and pinion, and the dynamic effects of the tires. After the causality was applied, the obtained equations were solved using a fourth order Runga Kutta routine and a methodology was presented which can be used as a tool to design power steering systems.
