The continuously-variable CFT 20 E automatic transmission has been developed as a response to expected customer and market requirements. The main development goal has been to produce a transmission system which can contribute to reducing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions when working in coopertion with the engine. The design incorporates a broad-range continuously-variable torque converter operating in conjunction with the electronic control unit. In cyclic tests, fuel consumption reductions of at least 10 % have been achieved in addition to improvements in performance and comfort.
