The experimental flywheel automobile constructed in 1976 at the University of Wisconsin has demonstrated an increase in fuel mileage of approximately 50 % over the Federal Urban Driving Cycle (FUDC). The continuously-variable transmission (CVT), based on commercially available components, was the system element having the highest energy loss over the cycle. Based on information from vehicle tests and further analysis, several CVT designs have been developed as candidates for a second-generation flywheel automobile being designed to achieve 21 km/l over the FUDC at an inertia weight of 1360 kg, a 100 % improvement over an equivalent conventional vehicle. The designs are based on dual-range V-belt systems (steel or rubber), the hydrostatic power-split principle, and a multispeed gearbox with slipping-clutch system. The specifications for the CVT are given, along with design details and other performance characteristics of the developed designs. (Wassmann)
