Automotive internal combustion engines have recently been required to reduce CO2 emission, one of the world's environmental issues. The CO2 emission reduction needs the enhancement of the engine's energy efficiency, in other words, the reduction of cooling loss, exhaust loss and friction loss. Mazda developed the Miller cycle gasoline engine as a highly energy-efficient engine for 3L-class passenger vehicles. The engine has smaller displacement and therefore less friction loss. The 2.3 L V6 4-valve DOHC engine with nominal compression ratio 10 adopts the late closing timing of intake valves, and realizes both 'excellent drive feel' obtained with 3L or more displacement engines and 'good fuel economy' of 2L engines, combined with the Lysholm compressor. In the future, the engine energy efficiency will be further improved by developing a much smaller displacement engine with much higher torque, by adopting 4-cylinder engines, or by incorporating lean burn technologies. The Miller cycle engine will be one of the major environment-friendly technologies in 21st century.
