LIDAR is an acronym for Light Detection and Ranging, a technology that uses a laser beam to locate (and in some cases identify) light scattering and fluorescing centers. These centers may be as large as an airplane or vehicle, or as small as a dust particle or a molecule of interest. The location (range) is determined by the time it takes for the light to travel out from the transmitter to the scattering center and return to the receiver. The light beam can be of any wavelength, but different wavelengths have different properties and advantages. By scanning the beam and the receiver, LIDAR plots the location of all centers. Thus it can define the location of a cloud of particles. If this cloud is moving in time, then the path of the motion (or dispersal) can be tracked as well. The great advantage of a LIDAR system is that it can cover broad areas very quickly, and can locate and track the motion of the scattering centers. LIDAR has been used by Los Alamos National Laboratory and Santa Fe Technologies in a number of studies of transportation-related air pollution, which will be described below. Santa Fe Technologies is also developing two laser-based devices to solve problems in individual vehicle identification and emissions in real time at highway or very low speeds. These devices enhance studies of transportation-related pollution by providing far more accurate and detailed data about both individual vehicle and cumulative traffic behavior.
