Advanced ceramics are being increasingly used or considered for the automotive industry, for example, turbocharger rotors, catalytic converter substrates, diesel particle filters, rocker arm tips, swirl chamber and recently components for the valve train system. For ceramic valves, silicon nitride (Si3N4) is the material most often considered due to its low mass, high strength at elevated temperatures and good wear and chemical resistance. The making of prototypes and small production of ceramic valves has enabled the fundamental properties and advantages gained in using ceramic valves to be established. The next step is to design a mass production process that will consistently produce several million pieces with the same quality as the prototypes. This process, from the powder stage to the finished valve, will incorporate equipment that has already being proven in mass production of other ceramic components. An important step in this process is the inspection which will include a specially developed patented proof test.
