The implementation of alternative motor fuels is a way to reduce automotive emissions. However, the gasoline passenger cars of today are relatively clean, especially when using improved gasoline qualities. Therefore, alternative motor fuels are often best used when replacing diesel in heavy-duty vehicles. Activities to develop clean heavy-duty urban vehicles began in Finland in 1988. The first prototype vehicle, a 17-ton SISU truck was built in 1990. This LPG (propane) fueled truck was equipped with a 7.4-liter VALMET-engine, a closed-loop controlled fuel system and a three-way catalyst (TWC). In 1992/1993, a test fleet of seven vehicles was built. These vehicles, used for refuse collection, street maintenance etc. are subjected to a follow-up program. The ECOBUS, a 8.5 meter citybus was launched in April 1994. This vehicle combines mid-size, low emissions, low noise, low floor and recyclable materials. The bus is offered in diesel, LPG and CNG versions based on the VALMET 634-engine. This paper describes design features of the SISU gas truck and the ECOBUS. It also discusses emission performance and field experience of gas fueled vehicles. Included is data from a MAN LPG-bus, which has been in operation since 1991 and subjected to a close follow-up program. The Finnish experience with gas fueled vehicles has been good. The field tests have demonstrated, that gas fueled vehicles using TWC technology can achieve NO(x)-values below 1 g/kWh also after considerable mileage.
