Laser welding of aluminum structures has been subject of research and development work recently. This technology has now been developed to a standard that its application in industrial production is within reach. Economical reasons determine the application of laser welding especially to complex aluminum structures made of extruded aluminum profiles. These constructions provide high mechanical strength combined with a lower weight compared to structures made of steel. The complex shape of extruded profiles have advantages in strength but also due to their production method disadvantages in presicion. Therefore joint geometries vary in shape and width of welding gap. Especially in the case of large welding gaps, laser welding processes are hardly applicable and in addition the aluminum oxides at the material surface prevent the laser energy from beeing absorbed properly. As a result from all these difficulties the weld seam contains pores, parts with local overtemperature, tracks with expelled molten aluminum and sometimes cracks within the molten area.
