This paper presents a system developed for digitalizing three-dimensional objects all around with a smooth surface and their introduction in a CAD system and rapid prototyping machine. The system is based on the acquisition of the sequence of projection images of a laser line onto the object surface when this is moving in front of two cameras. This beam projection lights a three-dimensional curve on the surface of the object, whose image is processed to obtain the three-dimensional real object coordinates, which form a quadrant of the object. The remaining quadrants are obtained by rotating the object around a calibrated axis. The three-dimensional model of the object is generated with the four quadrants. This object is introduced in a CAD station and commands for rapid prototyping machinery are generated. Finally, the results for application in the footwear industry and rapid prototyping with power laser are presented.
