In the current 90's, the forging manufacturers challenge is to increase their competitiviness by reducing the lead time and costs of their product and improving the quality at the same time. All these points are basically conditioned during the forging design phase. Some aspects such as radius, draft angles, flash land and preforms have high influence in the final piece and the production process. This paper describes an application to design axisymmetrical forging pieces and dies, based on design rules and variational geometry. First, axisymmetrical pieces were classified into families; then, forging design rules were identified for draft angles, radius, flash land and preforms. Finally, the application was implemented in I/EMS from Intergraph using the Parametric Programming Language (PPL) and the I/FORMS interface.
