To perform tasks that are not within reach of the conventional robotic manipulators, a new generation of robotics system should be developed. Climbing robots would be a possible solution because they can reach the top of building, ships, nuclear reacotors, aircraft, or any other structures with smooth surfaces. These climbing robots use vacuum, magnetic, or propeller for adhesion to surfaces. This paper describes the design of a mobile robot that can climb from one surface to another surface. The distinguishing feature of its design is such that it no only moves on vertical or horizontal surfaces, but also it can climb from floor to the side wall, and from the side wall to the ceiling. In addition, it can move from a surface to another parallel surface as long as the distance between them is within reach of the robot. The robot can change its direction by a rotary joint to any desired angle.
