Electric propulsion systems for ships have undergone a recent revival with a number of installations being made on major passenger vessels and shuttle tankers in addition to more traditional installations on icebraking vessels. Technological improvements have allowed the inherent electric propulsion system benefits of ease of control and flexibility of ship architecture to be exploited in a more cost effective manner. The use of electric drives over the past century is reviewed, focussing much of the technical descriptions on their use in icebreaking ships where most of the significant developments have been made between the 1930's and the 1980's. Futuredevelopments such as the US Navy's Advanced Surface Machinery Programs and recent developments in the application of magnetohydrodynamics, MHD, toexperimental ship propulsion are also discussed.
