Vehicles have to be developed under fatigue and durability aspects. To cope with this problem there are many analytical and test methods. Only a consideration of the different applications and mutual use of different methods lead to a consistent durability and fatigue analysis. Life calculation methods based on nominal stress or local strain may be used in the design phase for dimensioning and optimization. If already test results with variable amplitude loading are available relative methods can be used to achieve higher accuracies. However, the key to a successful durability analysis is still testing. Testing in the laboratory has to be favoured as compared to road testing with respect to time and cost saving. Test objects range from small components to full-size vehicles and there are quite a few test arrangements. To get full advantage of laboratory testing a fatigue sensitive editing of the input data has to be performed.
