With the introduction of increasingly stringent vehicle emission legislation one of the key tasks facing the automobile aerodynamici is to ensure that vehicle aerodynamic improvements, such as drag reduction, give real benefits on the road. Traditional vehicle aerodynamic development is undertaken in full-scale wind tunnels which provide a repeatable and controlled environment for testing but fail to fully simulate road conditions. This paper describes an investigation to measure the on-road drag effects of systematic aerodynamic configuration changes to a passenger car. The on-road drag measurements are compared with those derived from the wind tunnel.
