The US Navy has demonstrated a low-cost vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding process for the fabrication of high-performance composite ship structures including monocoque, single-skin stiffened, and sandwich configurations. The resulting mechanical properties for the structures are competitive with those achieved using wet lay-up or prepreg and autoclave cure. Composite design concepts and prototypes have been developed for composite deckhouse, mast, and foundation structures and fabricated using this process. Prototype structural performance has been successfully demonstrated under dynamic load requirements including air blast and shock. Analytical tools for predicting the air blast response of deckhouse and mast structures have also been validated. The paper discusses some recent successful experience with the repair of a thick glass-reinforced plastic sonar dome using this process. Some potential near-term applications of the fabrication process for composite ship structures are identified.
