Methanol-fueled, phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) powered buses are being developed under Phase II of a cost-shared Government program. This project will result in three 29-foot test-bed buses and the conceptual design for a 40-foot bus. The work is being carried out by H Power Corporation, the prime contractor, and five subcontractors. This technology has substantial potential payoff: reduced noxious emissions, domestic fuel usage; higher propulsion system efficiency; and reduced noise pollution. Also, these busses are being developed to address all performance requirements and features of high-quality transit buses in service today. All of the primary energy for bus propulsion and accessories is supplied by methanol via the nominal 50 kW PAFC system. A surge battery, linked to the fuel cell output through a step-up chopper, provides incremental power for accerelation and hill-climbing. The battery is charged by the fuel cell during low-to-moderate loads and also accepts charge from braking energy. The fuel cell subsystem was integrated during the latter part of 1993; results were in line with earlier hardware evaluations and meet the initial performance specification for the fuel cell subsystem. The first test-bed bus is expected to be fully integrated in February 1994.
