In this paper is described how a virtual environment may be applied in a teleoperation sensor and control system as the man-machine interface for remotely controlling the operations of a platform in a (partly) unknown environment. A classification scheme is given to distinguish among various teleoperation control strategies with different levels of autonomy. Space based teleoperation applications provide examples of each of the different categories of teleoperation systems. A functional architecture for an advanced teleoperation workstation is described. The virtual environment technology aspects in general, and especially the issues related to the maintenance of a consistent environment model are described in more detail. Finally, the implications for non-space based applications are discussed.
