A study was conducted to determine the applicability of the Taguchi technique coupled with the ASTROS code for use in optimum wing structural design. It was found that this procedure can be effectively used to determine the optimum wing internal and external geometry for minimum wing weight. The Taguchi technique was used to select the required computer runs to be made and an interactive code called ASTRIGS was used to develop the input data required for the ASTROS code. The ASTROS code was then used to determine the minimum wing weight with a set of multidisciplinary design conditions. Finally, Taguchi techniques were used to determine the optimum configuration. The study identified the important wing parameters for optimum structural design as well as defined a procedure for selecting the minimum number of computer runs required to determine the optimum wing shape for minimum weight.
