The problem of the shock isolating mounting of a 50 cc. single-cylinder engine without countershaft on a motorcycle is examined. First, the influence of the crankshaft balancing on the inertia loads generated by the reciprocating masses was mathematically investigated and closed-form formulas are provided. A simple two-dimensional model was used for the further calculations. The engine was modelled as a rigid body elastically mounted on a rigid frame, so that no attempt was made to taking into account the influence of the frame modes on the overall riding comfort of the motorcycle. This simplified model helped investigate different solutions and understand the influence of the design parameters. Finally, comparisons were made between tests carried out on instrumented vehicles and theoretical predictions.
