For the last two years the Danish consultancy Dwinger Marineconsult has carried out a lot of A/Amax calculations for different shipowners. During these calculations it has become evident that the A/Amax procedure as outlined in MSC/Circ 574 has drawbacks, which can give some paradoxical results, especially for one-compartment ships. These paradoxes will be describedin this article by showing two examples of A/Amax calculations, one for aone-compartment ferry and another for a two-compartment ferry. The main result of these two cases is somewhat paradoxical, because the two-compartment ship has a significantly higher degree of survivability, but it has the lowest A/Amax ratio for exactly the same KG value and hull form.
