Der niederländische Anteil an der europäischen Schiffbauproduktion betrug 1990, Tonnage in CGT gemessen, etwa 8-10 % und an der Weltschiffbauproduktion etwa 2 %. Insgesamt waren in der Schiffbauindustrie 16100 Personen beschäftigt. Nach Jahren der Stagnation und des Kapazitätenabbaus war 1990 wieder ein Anstieg im Schiffsneubau um 8 % und in der Schiffsreparatur um 6 % zu verzeichnen. Neben modernen Werften verfügt die holländische Schiffbauindustrie über gut ausgebildete Fachkräfte.
