Design for recycling is far more than the preferred use of thermoplastics as materials and the use of reversible fasteners. An overall compromise must be found between manufacturing feasibility and dismantling feasibility with the objective to recover a maximum of valuable material with a minimum of labour. Manual disassembly will remain the standard method to get non-metallic materials for recycling until commercial processes and the necessary equipment will be available for chemical conversion of polymer materials which will be separated from end of life vehicles using mechanized operations. Examples demonstrate how design for recycling can be practized already now.
