The use of a 'zero emission vehicle' is forced by an increasing consciousness concerning environmental problems. As an electro-chemical storage of energy in production-stage, NiCd accumulators have many advantages compared with Pb/PbO2 batteries regarding electric-vehicle drive. The increasing demand for NiCd-cells can not be separated from a corresponding production-recycling-cycle. To realize an effective recycling, the following requirements will be examined: the properties of nickel and cadmium and a potential environment-pollution, the expected return of spent batteries, the situation of raw material on the international market. The presentation of the treatment and the industrial process of the scrap follows and will be completed by the value of emission and the remaining substances as well as their integration into the legal frame. Finally, a view of ecologic and economic aspects will be taken.
