The famililar cruise control system that has been with us for years can be expanded to provide adaptive cruise control with the aid of a range sensor, a closed-loop controller and actuators that act on the throttle valve and brake. Such a system automatically regulates both the speed of the vehicle and the distance between it and the preceding vehicle, and also supplies warnings for the driver in critical situations. The comfort and safety of driving are improved. This paper presents a compact experimental system developed at Bosch which operates with either a LIDAR or RADAR sensor and has been integrated into a standardly equipped vehicle. A signal processor analyzes the sensor signals and acts both as a closed-loop controller and a warning system for collision avoidance.
