The machine vision systems of intelligent vehicles perform two functions. One is obstacle detection and the other is visual navigation. This paper concerns the visual navigation. We propose a steering control algorithm for vision-based vehicles, and have conducted several experiments to demonstrate the feasibility of the algorithm. Compensation of the delay of control due to the time required by image processing is also considered. This paper describes a new preview lateral control algorithm for an autonomous vehicle with machine vision and experiments with an AGV conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of the algorithm. The algorithm uses the whole information in the two-dimensional field of view, which enables robust and smooth lateral control. Compensation of the delay due to the time for image processing is also considered.
