A dynamic model of an electronically controlled hydraulic power steering system is developed to analyze the overall system stability and to help determine the system dynamic and control parameters. The system modeled is a variable assist automotive power steering system using a rotary valve and solenoid valve. It is composed of three energy domain subsystems, hydraulic, mechanical and electrical, incorporated by electro-hydraulic and hydro-mechanical interfacing devices. The hydraulic system can be further subdivided into flow control, pressure control and fluid transmission line subsystems. Each of these subsystems has influential dynamics on the overall system stabilities, and some have built-in feedback loops which require detailed dynamic analysis for the overall control system design. In this paper, each of the subsystems is modeled and analyzed independently. Then, using block bond graph and bond graph causality stroke concepts, these subsystems are integrated to form a complete system model. Using this model, the overall dynamics are analyzed including the wave dynamics between the hydraulic components. For the fluid transmission line wave dynamics, a modal approximation technique is employed. Based on the extensive simulation study, some design guidelines are suggested for the improvements of the overall system dynamic performances.
