The possibility of reducing the pitching oscillations of a passenger car by tuning the rear suspension in sympathy with that at the front is examined by calculation of frequency response functions for a half car model. Literature relating to the discomfort caused by pitching is also reviewed. It is found that the pitch resonant condition can be suppressed through a geometric mechanism by choosing certain relationships between vehicle design parameters and forward speed. The same suspension design can give minimum pitching at one speed and maximum pitching at another but one design can be quite effective for speeds above 20 m/s. Vehicles with and without pitch tuning, with symmetric (linear) damping and with rebound biased (non-linear) damping, are simulated traversing a cosine bump in order to verify and demonstrate the differences in pitch and bounce responses of the various cases. The value of pitch reduction seems to have been exaggerated in the literature and it appears likely that rear/front suspension tuning will have significant value only in a minority of cases.
