Three methods are in common use for investigating vehicle ride quality. At the design stage, before the vehicle has been built, there is no alternative to using some theoretical approach. Once a vehicle is available, the other two methods, road and rig testing, become possible. Profiles used in rig testing are stored as computer files and can be repeated exactly any number of times. This is a great advantage over road testing, where for repeatability exactly the same track would have to be traversed at exactly the same speed each time. Rig testing is therefore particularly useful for assessing the effects of changes to the suspension, or for comparing different vehicles. The technique described depends on the system behaving linearly. Good results were obtained in the brief tests with an input velocity span of 1.5:1. If much larger excitation ratios are to be investigated, say simulating first and second class roads, it may be necessary to measure transfer functions afresh at two or more excitation levels, depending on the degree of non-linearity present in the suspension.
