The condition of an automotive gear box is investigated by the use of different monitoring methods. The three methods used are based on the stress wave sensor, accelerometer and the microphone respectively. Two 'intentional' faults were introduced on the meshing teeth of the reverse idler gear. For a specific running speed signal analysis for each sensor was then performed in parallel, and changes in the signature examined. The overall signal levels, at various running speeds, was also monitored for each fault type. Although the work is in the initial stage, the preliminary experimental results show that the degree of accuracy in fault detection of each sensing method was found to depend on the fault type. It is also shown, that while the accelerometer generally gave an indication of the existence of a fault, both the microphone and the stress wave sensor provided far more useful information.
