In these environmentally sensitive times the authors are bombarded with exhortations to 'reduce, re-use, recycle and replace' almost everything the authors consume including their limited resources of non renewable energy. Conservation is a key word in this so-called new technology but in reality many of these measures of reducing consumption of valuable resources were being practiced years ago in more difficult times, i.e., wartime. The demand for and use of energy has grown significantly in the last few decades and the authors are only just now beginning to realize that they are not making the best use of their available and limited reserves. In the supply of electricity the authors have been content with utilization of less than half of the energy the authors consume and in the supply of gas they use a significant proportion of the energy they provide to the market place to get the product to the customer. Unfortunately the authors cannot argue with the laws of Newton and physics but in some areas they can try to use them to improve their overall efficiency of energy utilization. One such area is in the transportation and distribution of natural gas to the customer, and it is this aspect that the paper is concerned with, in particular the recovery of some of the energy put into the gas stream in the process of supply to the market. This paper reviews the background to the developments that have taken place in the last few years in the recovery of energy in the gas stream in the process of pressure reduction with particular emphasis on the considerable potential in relatively small units, and considers the improvements in the technology needed to realize this potential and make a worthwhile contribution to 'Conservation'.
