Two generations of engines were designed and developed under the Automotive Stirling Engine program for the passenger car application. While technically successful, market conditions precluded the application of the engine. Recent emphasis on the environmental demands of major cities in the United States and around the world have once again created a market need for power generation equipment that is pollution free. Emission tests on the automotive Stirling engine using natural gas confirmed that ultra low levels could be obtained. As a result, MTI initiated a program to commerzialize the Stirling engine in stationary applications. With U.S. Gas Industry support the design of the engine, a scaled version of the ASE, was started in 1991. This paper describes the market requirements for a stationary Stirling engine (MOD III) and the resulting engine design to meet these market needs.
