The improvement of vehicle fuel milage is one of the biggest task for automotive industries and enormous efforts are being devoted to develop more effective concept and designs to fit for the purpose. The vehicle weight and friction loss are the main two keys to be reduced to improve milage, reduction of component weight and friction loss are quite important. As about fourty percent of power is lost within engine, it is very important to reduce friction loss caused by reciprocating engine components. Considering those trends the investigations of available technologies enabling the effective use of light materials and their surface modification methods will play important key roles to stimulate fuel efficient engine research and development work. In this paper, the state and some focuses of materials and surface modification methods applicable to engine in-cylinder components are summarized.
