Several sensor approaches have been proposed to laterally guide a vehicle along an automated highway of the future. These include the use of a videocamera and a highway stripe, a radio frequency tuned buried wire coil, active guidance markers along the highway and magnetic nails imbedded in the highway along the disadvantages. In this paper the authors describe the use of a radar module which distinguishes between the pavement and either a painted stripe or stripping material placed in the center of the automated lane. It has the advantages of being potentially low cost as well as operational both day and night and in fog, ice or snow conditions. It is also compatible with the video camera sensor if a Backup system were also to be used.
