A survey of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods for flows around ships focusses on steady inviscid flows with free water surface and viscous flows without consideration of waves. Rankine panel methods are the standard tool for steady inviscid flows with free surfaces. 'Navier-Stokes' solvers solve the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for viscous flows. The results are not accurate enough to predict resistance. CFD gives rather insight into flow details. A tanker and a container ship serve as examples to demonstrate the state-of-the-art of CFD for ships.
