The engine start-tup transient phase is a critical one in launcher chronology. The engine has to reach nominal parameters in a very short time (typically one second). During this phase, there is a very strong coupling between fluid dynamics and thermal, mechanical and combustion phenomena. Each part of the engine has its own dynamic response and must therefore be characterized. Our concern here is the liquid hydrogen turbopump of the HM7b (ARIANE 4 third stage) and VULCAIN (ARIANE 5) engines. We used the measured parameters obtained either during tests of the turbopumps only or during tests of the complete engine. We first had to make a critical analysis of the measured parameters due to probe time response. Then, we used similitude parameters to describe the pump operating conditions. This approach was successfully applied to the start-up phase of our turbopumps. We show that the pumps have a quasi-static behaviour, provided that inertial terms are accounted for. The study points out criteria for blockage and runaway of pumps caused by cavitation. These criteria specify the operating limits of pumps during the transient phase.
