During fiscal 1992 preparations on the CleanFleet project for demonstrating 111 delivery vans on five alternative fuels and control gasoline were completed. Demonstration of propane gas, California Phase 2 reformulated gasoline, methanol (M-85), electric vehicles and compressed natural gas (CNG) began. The gaseous and liquid fueled vehicles are all model year 1992 vans manufactured by Ford, Chevrolet and Chrysler. Modifications were required to the Ford and Chevrolet vehicles for use of alternative fuels. Extensive modifications were made to the ventilation systems of the facilities housing propane and CNG vehicles. Employees of the host fleet operator were trained in the use of alternative fuels. Data are being gathered on vehicle emissions, performance, safety, reliability, maintenance, and durability. The cost associated with converting to and using each of the alternative fuels are also being gathered. Through October 1992, more than 350,000 kilometers had been accumulated on the CleanFleet vehicles.
