Solving the nation's energy dependency and environmental problems requires ways to increase the use of cleaner alternative fuels in heavy duty vehicles. Increasingly stringent emissions regulations require industry access to independent laboratories, capable of performing emissions analysis for heavy duty vehicles. However, facilities that perform such work often require costly disruption of the vehicles' operating schedule, removal to distant test sites and some vehicle disassembly. West Virginia University has designed, constructed and is currently operating a unique, transportable heavy duty emissions testing laboratory. During 1992, this laboratory conducted a number of emissions tests and reported valuable results. Related research is on-going in an attempt to study the engineering design and optimization of alternately fueled engines. The details of this laboratory, the test results of 1992 and related research are discussed in this paper.
