The increasing use of ABS and TCS goes hand in hand with a steady increase in available performance and, at the same time, of the functions, for example Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD). This development mainly results from the considerable improvement of microprocessor and tool capabilities, quality and system dependability of the hardware, in particular of the hydraulic components, are still the basic qualities, even for an advanced system. Traction control systems (TCS), using brake application of the driven wheels to control the slip, place specific requirements on the master cylinder. These requirements appear in the case of brake fluid suction through the master cylinder and by braking - especially with ABS - during an active traction control mode. To meet the additional requirements, a new tandem master cylinder has been designed. The major characteristics are high pressure withstanding central valves with little flow resistance.
